I love Japanese food. One of my very favorite cook books is Vegan Japaneasy., which I cook from all the time. So I was delighted to learn that a new sushi restaurant had opened in the heart of downtown Larkspur!

Their vegan offerings are very limited. I hope this will eventually change, but until then, a vegan can eat a standard veggie sushi meal here. The review below was from their third night open for business, and it was clear they were still ironing out the expected kinks- so keep that in mind as you read on.

I ordered the miso soup, edamame, the seaweed salad, and all three of their veggie rolls (avocado roll, cucumber roll, and a “veggie” roll that had cucumber, avocado and burdock). The sushi rice is good, which is always important, and the cucumbers were really crisp and fresh. The seaweed salad was the interesting dish, with a really unique variety of sea vegetables. The miso soup was served luke warm, and the edamame were really overcooked. But again, it was night #3 of being open for business, so I expect these dishes will see improvement over time.

Of course, I think the chef could get a LOT more creative with vegetable rolls than what they currently offer. One look at the menu of Shizen SF and one can see what is possible with a little bit of thought and creativity!

I really want Keiko to succeed so I will be going back….and I will suggest they add more vegan options to the menu. :)
