Mamahuhu
This is what all modern restaurants should aspire to.
Mamahuhu has a terrific menu of updated and innovative Chinese food dishes where diners can opt to “veganize” nearly every dish on the menu simply by swapping out mushrooms for beef, or tofu for chicken, etc. They are setting the standard for the new normal in dining, where a large group of people can dine together and everyone leaves happy, regardless of dietary choices.
With Mamahuhu, Michelin-starred Chef Brandon Jew of Mister Jiu’s fame brings a sophisticated taste to Mill Valley. There are so many hits on this menu, it is tough to know where to begin. The must-not-miss dish is the broccoli and shiitakes, with cauliflower, kale. The smokiness (from what I presume is a very hot wok) is just delicious, and the sauce is perfectly dressing the vegetables without drowning them. We also love the sweet and sour cauliflower, battered in rice flour and friend, and served with peppers and pineapple. The mapo tofu with mushrooms will set your mouth on fire in a good way, and the egg rolls are the best I have ever tasted.
The salads deserve a call out here, because they are so creative and delicious. Be sure to try the chrysanthemum salad, which is a wild mash-up of chrysanthemum, celery, smoked tofu, cauliflower and cilantro that somehow meld into an incredibly unique flavor bomb. The crunchy cabbage salad is tossed with mandarins and crunchy cashews in a sesame dressing, but the real delight here is the fried Hodo tofu cracker on top. I could eat those by the dozen!
We were also pleasantly surprised by the flavor of the tomato garlic chow mein, which sounded so odd we almost skipped it, but craving some noodles we added it to our order and finished every last bite.
The super sterile design of the interior here makes it clear that they set this location up for to-go orders, which is great for those nights when you don’t feel like cooking but aren’t up for a night out. There are so many vegan dishes on the menu here, and I look forward to working my way through all of them!
